Standing Yoga Poses

Standing Postures connect us to the Earth & require awareness in the feet & legs. Do my feet grip the Earth or can I spread the bones of my feet on the Earth to make a deeper & broader connection? When my feet engage energy rises up the legs & can then be directed up the spine, energising my whole being. Standing Postures ground me, they make me feel strong & stable. In Balancing Postures one leg works as hard as both legs in two legged Postures. Balancings require an internal dialogue with gravity, constantly negotiating strength with flexibility, giving with receiving, holding with releasing – as balance is never static! In two legged Standing Postures I need to spread my attention & my awareness equally into both feet & both legs, holding stability evenly regardless of the position of my trunk. Standing Postures strengthen & prepare my body for Sitting Postures & Inversion, for Pranayama & for sitting in Meditation.

Utthita Trikonasana

In Utthita Trikonasana I experience complete stability, internally & externally supported by the most stable of geometric shapes – the equilateral triangle. The action of the thigh of the back leg moving back & the front leg thigh externally rotating & moving forward, brings the trunk into alignment over the front leg. So the stability & support of the legs offer the trunk of the body & the arms complete freedom to move.
